Configurations

Configurations are the text parameters that tell collectors and features what data to collect and when or how often to collect it.

The appropriate collector or subsystem reads the Configuration file at startup time. When Prognosis is shutdown, active Configurations will be remembered and activated again next time the collector is started. The Configuration definitions are kept in Configuration text documents.

The icon in the Document or Node Navigators of the Windows Client indicates a Configuration document.

There are a number of different Configuration types and one of each type can be run on a server at the same time. A pre-packaged set of Configurations is included and if necessary these can be modified to suit the monitored environment. It is also possible to create one or more additional Configuration documents for each type and store these in the Document Navigator. This might be done in order to have a set of different parameters for various situations. However, as only one copy of a Configuration type can be run at any one time, starting an additional copy will override the version that is currently running with the new configuration parameters.

Configuration parameters can be edited by using either of the following options:

  • Windows Client,

  • Administration tool of the Web Application,

  • Command Line Utility, IRCMD,

  • Configuration utility, IRCNFUTL. This can also be used to alter configurations when Prognosis has been shutdown.

A Configuration can be started or updated at any time using either of the interfaces listed above. If a current service is using some aspect of a Configuration that has been modified, in some cases the function/collector may need to be restarted in order to utilise the changes; however this may not always be the case, depending on the Configuration, changes are applied immediately to the running system. This behaviour is dependant on the function implementation and the behaviour should be specified in the help accordingly.

Please refer to the Configurations Syntax for details of the parameters that are available for each Configuration type.
